Heading Home for a Few Days
I (Paul) have the special opportunity this weekend to fly home to see my parents! Mom is still in the hospital and dad is at home. Praise God with me for His provision in a gift toward the plane ticket! Please pray for my travels. I will only miss two days of school as I travel April 10-14.
I took this picture today at RGBI because I wanted to show my mom these kids who are major Sugar Creek Gang fans!
These are the Lopez kids.
Their parents are John and Cindy Lopez. John’s heritage is Mexican, but he grew up in the USA and never learned Spanish. The family now lives in Waterbury, Connecticut, where John is the Assistant Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. John is here at RGBI to learn Spanish in order to be able to help start a new Spanish church in Connecticut.
Almost every day I go to John and Candy’s for coffee during our morning break. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know this family!
I found out their kids were real fans of the Sugar Creek Gang books, but they didn’t have any of their own. So I made a deal with them...I will provide the books if and as they read them. There are 36 books in the series and today I gave them numbers 20-23. They are excitedly devouring the books!
Maybe you know that my mom is the daughter of Paul Hutchens the author of the Sugar Creek Gang books. In her growing up years, she provided some of the ideas and antics of the character “Charlotte Ann”, who was Bill Collins’ little sister in the series. Bill of course is the main character in all the stories.
There’s a cool fan website for the Sugar Creek Gang if you’re interested. Grandpa started as an evangelist but developed tuberculosis and could no longer preach. A friend encouraged him that if he could no longer speak his thoughts, then he should write them. As a result, the ministry of the Sugar Creek Gang books has far outlived my Grandfather’s life on this earth. God always has a purpose and a plan!
Well, looking at the forecast… I better pack my winter coat! I’m leaving Edinburg, Texas where its supposed to be 99 today and heading to Minnesnowta where its in the 30’s and snowing right now!
