Inner-City Outreach Event

Part of our missionary training this week has been a practical experience helping with an inner-city outreach in Philadelphia.

Last Saturday, in cooperation with Cornerstone Community Church, our team was part of a Block Party for a neighborhood that is known for its high crime rate. It’s estimated that more than 500 people came out to the party! There were several people walking the street sharing the Gospel one-on-one and that evening the Gospel was shared again at a free street concert. Our whole family got involved.

On Sunday, we attended church there and each day this week, we are doing door-to-door evangelism.

Many of the people we have met have been open to talking about the Lord. Some have received Christ! Some already know Him. Most have been willing to at least have us pray for them. And a few have turned us away.

I have to be honest, it has been quite some time since I’ve gone out witnessing. At first it was really intimidating and difficult for me to think of what to say. I was hesitant about the tools we are using--just being unsure of myself. But each day, it has gotten easier to talk freely about the Lord and to share the Gospel. I’m very thankful for this opportunity and I hope it is only a restarting and a reigniting of my desire to be a witness for Jesus Christ!

Romans 10:13-15

for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Here are some pictures from the Block Party Outreach Event.

The staff of Cornerstone Community Church have been ministering in this community for more than 20 years. They have a very positive reputation in the community and that has enabled our ministry to be accepted and recognized. When we were visiting a house today, someone had told a friend that we were Jehovah’s Witnesses, but they were quickly corrected because it was recognized that we were from Cornerstone.

Colossians 4:3-4

“And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.”
