Jovenes Camp at El Monte

image

On the heels of the big mid-week camp, we ran our own El Monte camp for Jovenes (pronounced “hoe-ven-es") over the weekend.

Jovenes in Mexico range from age 16 on up.  It was a small turnout and had a much different feel from the large school group that left at noon that same day.

We added our own MKs to the mix of campers.  It felt good to be working on our own philosophy of ministry and seeing it fleshed out over the weekend.

There was one group of guys and one group of girls.

This is my favorite picture of all so far!  There were two girls with us whom we know are not Christians.  Our speaker spoke two nights and gave a clear Gospel message the last night of camp.

The program is counselor-centered and most of the activities were done in small groups.  They even had to go out into the woods and cook most of their meals on the fire.  I’m sorry I don’t have pictures of this!  It was very well received by all.

Roxanne was our main food coordinator and dishwasher, though the campers and counselors all pitched in.

After the activities of Friday night and all day Saturday, swimming and table games were a favorite for Sunday afternoon.

Though I wanted to see more campers, I’m thankful for a smaller event to help us develop our systems and processes.  We have a camp for “adolescentes” in November and we have word from local pastors that this event will be larger.  Pray that God will lead as we continue to lay the forms of Christian Camping here at El Monte!

It is often the smaller intimate camps that make the greatest impact on the campers. I will pray for the seeds planted at El Monte to be watered elsewhere. Especially the 2 unsaved campers....and by the way, Dutch Blitz is my absolute favorite game in the world. I learned it from my Amish friend (only fitting since the Amish invented it) and I’m planning to print off a photo of this for her. Just think how amazed she’ll be to find out that it’s being played in Mexico!
