Our Trip to Historic Philadelphia
We are enjoying having most of our weekends off this fall. Last Saturday, we joined another family for a train ride into downtown Philadelphia for a day of sightseeing. Neil and Pam Donoghue and their kids Megan and Stephen are missionary candidates with us.
It was a fun trip to see the Birthplace of America.
We learned that 230 years ago this past week, the British occupied Philadelphia and set up their headquarters in the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall) for 9 long months during the Revolutionary War. While they enjoyed the comforts of the city, George Washington and his troops were suffering through the winter at Valley Forge.
The Donoghues.
The Wilsons.
Waiting in line to tour the inside of Independence Hall.
Inside Independence Hall.
The chair in the front of the room on the right in our picture is the chair that George Washington sat in during the meetings in which independence was declared.
We found a really fun place to eat lunch in a 50s style diner called “Johnny Rockets.”
Everything they did in this restaurant was fun!
While we were waiting for our food, the music revved up and the servers all stopped what they were doing and started to dance! It was quite a show.
Other sights…
Reenacting the movie “National Treasure” by running through Washington Park across from Independence Hall.
We also saw the ruins of Benjamin Franklin’s home, a museum of his life and his many inventions, and the historic Christ’s Church. Our last stop before heading home was the home of Betsy Ross. It was so interesting to see these things firsthand. It helped us imagine what it might of been like for the founders of our country.
