A Truck for El Monte!

We’re thanking the Lord for His provision of a four-door 2004 Ford Ranger for El Monte!

While this truck will have multiple uses, it will primarily serve our grounds maintenance crew.

They’re very thankful to have a truck like this to drive around the property to the various areas of work. ...of course now we expect more out of them.

This picture is taken from the viewpoint high above on the rock cliff at El Monte.

The gift for this truck and the 4-wheeler that we recently purchased came from a group of churches in Canada. Praise the Lord with us for this extra special provision for El Monte!

Winter in Mexico

These beautiful snow capped mountains are often not visible through the haze and smoke of any given day. But recently, we’ve had some abnormally wet and cloudy days (even though it is dry season) that have cleared the air and left a lot of snow on the high mountains.

Below are several pictures of the mountain Iztaccihuatl that stands 17,159ft above sea level.

The pictures below are of the neighboring mountain, which is an active volcano, Popocatepetl that stands 17,800ft.

These next two pictures show the proximity of the two mountains side by side.

In between the two mountains is the ”Paso de Cortes” where Cortes and his men crossed on the march toward Mexico City in his conquest.

We’ve enjoyed some day off trips up to these mountains to hike around on Iztaccihuatl. Popocateptl is closed to hiking because it is active and puffs smoke daily.

Please take a look at the following interviews of Paul’s sister’s family on local television networks in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. They are some of the adoptive parents who were matched to two Haitian children, a brother and a sister.

They have been waiting for over two years for Patricia and Philippe to be able to come home. I would like you to see the coverage and pray for God to bring these children home as soon as possible. Also pray for all the other children and other people in Haiti as you probably already are. May the Lord sustain them and bring them provisions that they need!

Here is a third interview that aired on Saturday night.

The following link is a story that ran on Sunday on FOX NEWS about the orphanage that the kids where the kids are staying.

Please pray for my sister and her husband and their kids!

New Year’s Youth Retreat

New Year’s weekend, our local church here in Ticuman held a youth retreat at El Monte.

The focus of the retreat was new beginnings in your walk with Christ. It was a great turn-out with some that do not normally come to youth group!

They did a great job programming a variety of activities to enjoy fellowship while interacting with the subject at hand.

Rock climbing is always a hit!

We’ve introduced some new activities at El Monte too.

Box Hockey made by a winter volunteer.

Carpetball

Tetherball

And we divided the larger group into smaller units and did some initiative games.

PVC Golf, in which they have to walk toward a small basket while holding just the right tension on the ropes. Then they deposit the ball into the bucket. If they drop it, they have to start over.

In this next game, they have to support a tent pole on their fingers and lower it together, while keeping it level, all the way to the ground.

It’s not as easy as it looks. Usually in the first attempts, the pole keeps going up higher and they have to talk themselves through bringing it down together.

The debriefs after each of the different activities were very insightful and useful for connecting truth to life.

Of course any camp in Mexico isn’t complete without soccer. Pickup games are played any free moment.

Go Peter!

There were also the pinatas and the candy.

As you can see there were lots of activities and then some free time besides. It’s a great group of kids. We’re thankful to have our kids involved with such a great youth group that is focused on growth in Christ.

Construction of Second Soccer Field Underway

We completed the first soccer field last June and it has been used nearly every week since then. We are working toward being able to host multiple groups at one time so a second field is essential.

The second field will be terraced down from the first field.

With a small parking area in between the two fields.

In this next picture, if you look carefully, you can see one of the goal posts on the first field one terrace up.

This next view is looking straight down the valley from the first field.

As rocks are found, they are dug out and used for fill to level out the rest of the terrace.

Looking at the horizon line in the following picture, you can see the roof of the cabin on the camp ridge.

The scenery around these fields is amazing.

We’re trusting the Lord for what is needed to be able to finish the topsoil and sod to make this second field usable in 2010!
